About the Workshop:

The objective of this course is to help mental and behavioral health practitioners identify self-care practices that can be implemented to improve overall mental health and prevent burnout.  At the end of this course, attendees will obtain strategies to help implement self-care in their own life, and in their workplace.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to:
1) Describe the importance of embodiment in self care practices.
Identify embodied self-care practices that are effective for various personality types.
3) Implement the use of the Mindful Self Care scale developed by Catherine Cook Cottone, PhD for regular use to identify self-care needs.
4) Identify systemic interventions to increase self care and community care practices in the work setting.
5) Implement systemic interventions in the work place to increase self care and community care.


This presentation is intended for psychologists, other licensed mental health providers, and graduate students of psychology.

About the Speaker:

Whitney Owens, Psy.D. is the President of the Nevada Board of Psychological Examiners.  She has served on the NBOPE since 2016 and has served on the Application Tracking, Equivalency, and Mobility (A-TEAM) subcommittee since 2017.  Dr. Owens is a licensed psychologist and the co-owner of The Evidence Based Practice of Nevada, a behavioral healthcare clinic located in Henderson, Nevada. 

Since moving to Las Vegas in 2008, Dr. Owens has served in various leadership roles, including serving as the president of the Nevada Psychological Association from 2013-2014.  She received the “Outstanding Leadership Award” from NPA in 2014 for her work on the executive board. 

Dr. Owens is a 200-hour experienced registered yoga teacher (E-RYT 200) and has been trained in Baptiste Power Yoga, yin yoga, and other styles of vinyasa yoga.   Dr. Owens facilitates the Mind & Body Wellbeing course, a 12-week trauma-informed yoga course developed by Dr. Catherine Cook-Cottone, and participates in program research with yoga teachers in Rwanda.  Additionally, Dr. Owens has been comprehensively trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Radically Open Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, which incorporate mindfulness practices informed by Buddhism and Malamati Sufism.  Dr. Owens has co-led yoga and mindfulness retreats in Sedona, Arizona and has served on international yoga training teams.  Dr. Owens' CV
