About the Workshop

Sex is difficult for most people to talk about. Sex is also one of our most basic drives and is often where the most hidden aspects of the personal psychology can reside. Psychologists need to have basic competency to discuss openly and without judgment all aspects of sex and sexuality with their patients. This workshop aims to provide basic information about a range of topics regarding sexuality in psychotherapy. Many therapists will experience patients being attracted to them, as well as the therapist being attracted to the patient. Few institutions offer training in how to deal with this important dynamic in psychotherapy, and many therapists get in trouble by mishandling this phenomenon. This workshop offers direct instruction about how to deal with sexualized transference, as well as taking a thorough sex history, and identifying sexual dysfunction. Therapists have no room to judge their patients for being different than they are, and sex practices that are outside of the mainstream may be very intimidating for a therapist to deal with effectively in the psychotherapy. This workshop will deal with familiarizing the therapist with the differences between “kink” communities and real paraphilia, out of control sex behavior, and criminal sexual behavior. Finally, both our culture and our news media are shifting regarding gender non conforming populations. Although this includes gay men and lesbians, in this workshop I will discuss both the Trans and Intersex communities and their differences, so that the therapist may come away with a greater sense of confidence in identifying and understanding these often mistreated populations.
